sharifs return curtailed sent to exile again

Pakistan is a grim picture of flouting law, forcing exile, flourishing dictatorship and failed statecraft. The country seems to be fighting against itself at every door, be it at political, legal, social, military, economic or international level, branding the nation as turmoil-mired. As its fight against democratic rule continues, once again sending former PM Nawaz Sharif into exile, a US rights group has brandished the action as culpable and totally against international law.

Violation of the country’s Constitution that clearly dwells on Democratic Government seems to be increasingly becoming a tradition in Pakistan, as ever since the country was formed, dictatorship throttled democracy at every juncture. With this, political coups became quite a common scenario, challenging rule of law and rule of people. Dictatorship has been ruling nearly for half of the 60 years of the country’s birth. Popular government has never been allowed to blossom, with the democratic rulers sent to house arrest or exile.

terror tactics of musharraf continue ruling pakistan

Coups in the country have been a never-ending story, marginalizing people’s power for promoting self-interests. Nawaz Shariff was overthrown by Musharraf in 1999 and sent to exile, ever since the country has been a picture of trouble and turmoil, be it the Balochistan attack, the curbs on media, the overthrow of Chief Justice Iftikar Chuadhary and his reinstating by the Supreme Court, participation in the war on terror, the Lal Masjid massacre, the terrorist attacks and attempts on the life of President Musharraf. Today, when the people of Pakistan saw a beacon of hope that democracy will return to the country with the return of Shariff from exile, the very moment he landed on Pakistan soil was detained and again sent to exile in Saudi Arabia. What is Musharraf doing? How long will he continue his tyrannical rule and suffocate democracy?

Even the US has condemned his act as violation of international law that allows everyone to be restored to his or her land, be it an exiled leader or forsaken humanity. Who is Musharraf to deny this international right to Shariff, who had come to his land with dreams of restoring democracy? Shouldn’t Musharraf be detained for violation of the country’s Constitution? Does he deserve to be the forbearer of the country? Should he be allowed to let lose his rein of terror and write the tyrannical history of Pakistan with bloody ink?

Musharraf has throttled media in Pakistan, imposing stern censorships, but the international media can always keep a hawk’s eye on the military dictator and his dictatorial actions. It is now the responsibility of the world to threaten and persuade Musharraf to do away with his terrible tactics, restore democracy in the country and allow Shariff a safe and free return to his motherland. Musharraf must abdicate his thrown, only then Pakistan will breathe in free air without smelling foul.
