The D-day for Saddam Hussain, the vanquished autocrat of Iraq, is here. The former Iraq President is scheduled to appear before a special tribunal in Baghdad on October 19, or maybe, a few days later. What is being termed as ‘the trial of the century’, Saddam will be tried for a series of criminal charges against him, which include invasion of Kuwait, suppression of mass uprisings in northern and southern Iraq, crime against humanity, forced deportation of thousands of Fayli Kurds to Iran and gassing of Kurds occupying northern Iraq in 1998.
Who will disagree, it’s almost a natural justice for a despot, who had least concern for human lives, leave aside human values; but at the same time, it was painful to see once-all-powerful President being given a treatment worse than a we give mete out to animals.
