General Musharraf just wants to live. He has long ago given up bothering about power. He knew he was dead man walking when the right-wing fundamentalists in Northern Pakistan bayed for his blood. That was when he had wanted to depose the now under arrest ex- Chief Justice of Pakistan, Iftikhar Mohammed Chaudhry.

To survive, Musharraf has to cling to power. There is no master-stroke, no sinuous diplomatic policy involved in President Musharraf’s declaration of Emergency in Pakistan. Like any other dictator, he too is most bothered about himself. It is only as undesirable effects that he has strengthened the hands of the Pakistani Taliban, the al-Qaeda leaders hiding in the Pashtun regions and other believers in the strict Islamic code (Sharia laws).

The deposed Nawaz Sharif gains the most by the ill will of the people against Musharraf. And even the Pakistani army hates to fight their countrymen. Musharraf is no fool. Like all cunning men, he knows that his time has come. By declaring emergency he knows he is just prolonging his own inevitable end.

The UK Telegraph has pointed out some of the effects of the Emergency on Pakistan. They are all cliched. Who does not know that the rights of the common people suffer, opposition leaders are arrested and human rights pooh-poohed. But what the media does is just scratch the surface.

Let us see what the real reasons are for the Emergency and its impact on Southeast Asia and on the world at large.

The US had warned Musharraf in August not to declare Emergency. The US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice had this time too called up Musharraf advising him against the Emergency. Musharraf no longer listed to her. Is it conceivable that Musharraf knows any life except as a US crony? Then why has he decided to go against US wishes. The answer chills us. It is probable that Musharraf in not really acting contrary to US wishes.

The US wants to disorient and spread unrest in Southeast Asia. India has to be somehow crippled. She is becoming a threat. The strengthening rupee, the strong bullion reserves and steady flow of foreign investments are sure signs of India’s growth. Only with a rogue State by us can we be defeated. Thus this tacit support of US to Pakistan. This deception is so well done that the western media has either brought it or have sold them to the lie. The last is unlikely though.

To whom does Pakistan belong? It never belonged to the people of that nation. It has always belonged to the Arabs, those superb conquerors whose victims never will own up that their very existence serves Arab interests. Osama bin Laden is from Arab, but presents his project as global. Many buy Osama’s story. This is just an example to prove my point. The Arab masters have always done a better job at colonization than the whites. The latter got caught; the former has not yet been brought to the books. Through this ‘Emergency’ it is the Arabs who have strengthened their foothold in alien-land. This is in keeping with ancient Arab imperialistic policies.

There is talk that aid to Pakistan will be lessened. But that is nothing to a nation dependant on Gulf aid. The Middle-east funds countries like Pakistan and her mercenaries. So, the stopping of funds from the US is exactly what the Taliban and other advocates of Sharia Law want. Fundamentalist Islam considers receiving aid from godless nations sinful.

Musharraf has done the only intelligent thing that a man in his position ought to do. The famous European, Machiavelli had said as much in his Humanist book, The Prince. Now why is anyone blaming Mr. Musharraf? A man has to live to politick.
