In another case of human rights violation, two Red Cross workers from Sri Lanka were abducted and later on killed by their suspected captors. The reason behind the kidnapping and murder is not unknown. However, the Sri Lankan Government has come forward and stated that the purpose behind the killing is to tarnish the image of the country’s political regime.

The Presidential office said that the slaughter was a part of disinformation built-up against the President and the Government ahead of the public hearing on tsunami reconstruction and human rights by the European parliament in Brussels.

The victims both volunteers from the minority Tamil community of eastern district of Batticaloa had come to Colombo to attend a Red Cross Workshop. A group claiming themselves from the police crime investigation department at the Colombo Fort railway station abducted them.

Both went missing on Friday. Later on, their bodies were found shot on the head at Kiriella, 123 km southeast of Colombo on Sunday.

The President while condemning the brutal massacre has ordered an immediate inquiry and a thorough investigation into the incident.

The Sri Lankan Government and LTTE are facing charges of human rights violations by international human rights watchdog groups, ever since they waged the war against each other.
