Thousands of people in Pakistan chanted vociferous slogans against President Pervez Musharraf yesterday for his controversial suspension of Chief Justice Iftikhar M Chaudhry, on March 9, 2007.
Chief Justice Iftikhar M Chaudhry exonerated:
The clash between Musharraf supporters and protesters left many injured and police used tear gas shells and charged them with canes to disperse. Iftikhar M Chaudhry appeared sixth time for the hearing since suspension and defended himself successfully before the acting chief justice, Rana Bhagwan Das, the only Hindu who is in line to succeed Iftikhar M Chaudhry. Supreme Judicial Council (SJC) declared Justice Chaudhry free, sans any restraint on his movements.
Growing indifference against Musharraf:
Justice Iftikhar M Chaudhry, who is known for his judicial freedom, several times passed judgements against the government and was accused for the abuse of power. His dismissal led to the biggest confrontation and political crises since Musharraf took over the Presidency.
The ipso facto leads to the crux that there is growing indifference against president Musharraf in public and army. He has been confronted scores of times by the U.S. lawmakers and Afghanistan’s President Hamid Karzai for not doing enough to crack down on Taliban and al Qaeda outfits in the country.
When will he relinquish his post as an army chief and will pave the way for the democratic government is unknown. Pakistan needs a democratic government and Musharraf should quit as an army chief on moral grounds, for the good of the country.
