Pakistan’s dear old President Musharraf seems to be handling the pressure put on him by the US in a queer yet innovative manner. He has apparently decided to appeal to Pakistan’s 80 million women to actively discourage extremism in men otherwise the terrorists and fanatics will “sink” the country. This unique statement comes in que with the many opportunities Pakistan has been willing to provide to the woman population in the country since last year.
The president in his appeal said that Pakistan has given women an opening in all areas, including politics, and more than 40,000 are serving in government posts. This reflects the capabilities that women possess, which is why it is but natural for the President to try this new plan out. I mean what’s wrong with taking a shot at it. Plus, for once women and their convincing power over the men in their lives is being recognised my a MAN!
The president told all women:
Stop your men, your brothers, husbands and sons, from going onto the path of extremism,'’ the official Associated Press of Pakistan cited Musharraf as saying in Islamabad yesterday in an address marking International Women’s Day. ``This (extremism) is not in the interests of Pakistan.
He reasoned that since extremism and fanaticism is a state of mind above anything else, and therefore there is a good chance that women can make a considerable difference.
Well, hats off to you President Musharraf. It is quite laudatory that he would try and take this road less travelled and appeal to the better halves of the fundamentalists. Let’s see if it works.
