Pakistan’s wait for democracy is lingering and almost over for Nawaz Sharif. However for Benazir Bhutto, it is still alive. She is supposed to return on October 18 putting Musharraf’s request to delay return aside.
How good the idea of democracy is while backing the ex PM who puts the withdrawal of corruption cases against her as a precondition for her returning. So, is it worthwhile to talk about democracy? I may sound insane but it’s something that not only the elites in Pakistan but the party workers of Bhutto even wry.
For army politics is a forbidden fruit, a fruit that expelled Adam form heaven and many Pakistani generals form politics. So this time it won’t be different. Additionally, Bhutto’s fear that army ruler is plotting to kill her is worth contemplating over. So, is the spark round the corner? Nothing remains beyond imagination in Pakistan now-a-days.
Pakistan is sitting at the edge where it needs a spark and the mess that will follow is the fear of all including the world community for Pakistan is now witnessing recurrent terror attacks and its strengthening in Waziristan. The major concern is its nuclear equipments. So, will Bhutto’s return provide that spark?
As Supreme Court’s (SC) decision on a plea challenging Musharraf’s eligibility for the Presidential post is awaited, Musharraf doesn’t want to handcuff himself by striking a deal or welcoming Bhutto before his own election gets SC’s approval.
What does this mean? In both conditions - if deal is struck between Musharraf and Bhutto or not - Pakistan has to wait little too longer for the complete democracy. But for how long? Meanwhile, now all eyes are on SC’s decision which will decide the future course of action and Pakistan’s political destiny as well.
