Faced with a series of offensives against its territorial borders, Pakistan has issued a strict warning against any attempt to attack its borders. Such an attack, according to Foreign Office Spokesperson Tasnim Aslam, would be met with a ‘crushing reply’.
In an attempt to assert its sovereignty, the Pakistan government has issued a statement which delineates a strong reaction from the Pakistani army against any attack which threatens the territorial boundaries of the nation.
‘Everyone should know that we have the capability and determination to deal with such threats and defend our borders’
Such a defensive act clearly brings forth the feeling of insecurity and threat that Pakistan is feeling currently. Increasing pressure from the US to tackle the terrorist organisations in Pakistan, coupled with attacks on its border military posts by the Afghan army and NATO troops seem to have driven Pakistan to the edge of its patience.
What such an event is likely to set into motion is hard to comprehend and scary to imagine. The south-Asian continent is already a live zone of terror, waiting like a bubble to burst; and a warning like this one could trigger off something which would be almost impossible to retrieve at a later stage. The trust deficit between Pakistan and Afghanistan has resulted in deep amounts of tension between the two nations, and the warning at hand is only going to act as fuel in the fire.
The only possible solution at this point would be for the US and other major international players to step in, hold talks and try to calm down the rising levels of heat. But these countries also seem to have their hands full with Afghanistan, Iran, North Korea, Libya, Syria, Israel....I could go on and on. Placed in this scenario, that the international community at large is able to prevent a disaster is something we all should to pray for.
