North Korea, the eight added nation to the school of nuclear warhead equipped nations, denied meeting the Saturday’s deadline of closing its nuclear reactors. The reason for the reluctance is imminent, as promises made to North Korea by the U.N have not been kept. The assurance that came from the foreign minister of Korea, Kim Kye that IAEA inspector will have access to the nuclear reactors show the honesty of North Korea.

Positive strife

North Korea, as it seems ready to close its major nuclear reactors, is reiterating the demand of release of the funds by the World Bank. This is a positive step and should not halt the present endeavor, though it is difficult for Korea to shut down its major nuclear reactor according to Feb 2007 accord. The process of disarmament should continue particularly when there are positive signs, as it is necessary for the balance of power in Asia; it however, requires lot of compromises on both the sides.

Final resolution to the agreement

For the peaceful resolution of the agreement, some relaxation should be given to North Korea because it has only agreed to shut down the reactors after U.S promised to resolve the key financial issue within thirty days that it did not come up to. Decision taken in indiscriminate haste can be destructive to North Korea’s rapprochement and resumption of cordial diplomatic relations with U.S and Japan. The need of the hour is to kick start the Feb 2007 accord under which North Korea agreed to discard all its nuclear material, weapons and technologies and its return to the NPT. Failure of the agreement can be a serious threat to the security of the eastern region giving impetus to North Korea’s nuclear program and arms race in the region.
