The Bush administration is likely to press UN Security Council for a resolution against Myanmar owing to the illegal detention of Nobel Peace prize laureate Aung San Suu Kyi. Myanmar’s military regime is also under immense international pressure on its recent crackdown on ethnic minorities.
Recently, Myanmar had dismissed the demand for Suu Kyi’s release by the international community. Further, the Myanmar administration decided to extend the period of her house arrest until May 2007. This step encouraged the U.S. to escalate its campaign against Myanmar’s military rule in the UN Security Council.
The UN chief Kofi Annan has expressed deep disappointment with the recent Myanmar’s decision to extend the term for Suu Kyi and the plight of general people in the country especially ethnic minorities. Even Annan said that there could be a possibility of action against the Junta government if it continues with its erratic policies.
Meanwhile, Myanmar’s military government has alleged that the western nations are supporting ethnic Karen rebels who have recently faced offensive from the government.
Further, Myanmar accused the western nation on the pretext that they trying to control the political situation in Myanmar by using Karen rebels.
