
Pakistani President Parvez Musharraf would contest the elections for another five-year term possibly in November this year. The Pakistani government has said that Musharraf would seek re-election from the current National and Provincial assemblies.
The present National and Provincial Assembly would be dissolved in November this year. The cabinet, headed by PM Shaukat Aziz, has taken the decision in a meeting with constitutional experts on Wednesday.
The Information Minister Mohammad Ali Durani said that
the present assemblies would complete their term. The tenure of the president will expire on November 15.
The present assemblies would elect the President of the nation in accordance with constitutional provisions
However, he was remained silent on the question that whether Musharraf would continue to hold the posts, the Chief of Army staff as well as the head of state.
A team of constitutional experts, led by Sharifuddin Pirzada, briefed the cabinet on the constitutional and legal aspects of the presidential elections. Sharifuddin Pirzada is said to be a confidante of President Musharraf.
The Pakistan President’s present five-year term would end almost a week before the completion of the terms of the sitting assemblies on November 16, 2007.
Earlier, the present assemblies, after general elections in 2002, endorsed Musharraf’s election by a referendum.
On the other hand, the Ministers of Muthahida Quami Movement were absent at the cabinet meeting. The Muthahida Quami Movement is a key ally in the ruling Pakistan Muslim League in the government.
