After cracking down on the electronic media, the Musharraf regime is gearing for putting restrictions on the print media. Unfazed by the mounting criticism, the Musharraf regime is planning to introduce another gag order, which will restrict publication of "objectionable" editorial comments and cartoons in newspapers in the country. The National Security Council (NSC), after a meeting with the President, has directed the Law and Justice Ministry to promulgate an ordinance to limit publication of offensive cartoons or articles in newspapers and magazines that may be an insult on the armed forces or other state institutions. Already, a decree promulgated by Musharraf that gives extensive powers to Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (PEMRA) officials to close and seal premises and confiscate equipment of electronic channels that break law has drawn criticism in the country and abroad. Various Television channels have demanded an amendment of the PERMA laws. They insist that the government should bring in laws that they are in consonance with the principle of natural justice. Cable operators blacked out several TV channels this weekend for showing anti-Pakistan propaganda . Pakistani media’s only mistake has been that they have extensively covered the Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry’s suspension, which angered the authorities. Government’s threat is looming large on the Pakistan media and the self-reliant Musharraf regime will leave no stone unturned until the media is silenced fully. International regimes must take note of the grave situation in which media is finding itself in Pakistan.
