Japan has showed its disapproval at a resolution came before the US Congress in which the Congress has called Japan to apologize for the country’s use of sex slaves in wartime.The Japanese foreign minister Taro Aso said that the resolution was completely baseless.
Some of the members of the House of Representatives have sponsored the proposed resolution in Congress. They proposed through the text that Japan should formally resolve the issue of so-called ‘comfort women’.
However, Japan has accepted that its army had forced women to be sex slaves at the time of Second World War. But on the question of compensation Japan clearly rejected any claim.
According to the BBC report, more than 200,000 young women were captured during wartime. Later, they were forced to serve in Japanese army brothels as sex slaves.
Most of the victims, later known as comfort women, were from countries such as Korea, China, Philippines and Indonesia.
The Japanese minister Aso has described the non-binding resolution introduced in the US Congress as highly regrettable. He said;
The resolution was not based on objective facts.
Earlier this month, some members of HoR had introduced the resolution and called on Japan’s Prime Minister to formally concede, express regret and accept historical responsibility for the comfort women.
Last week, three former comfort women had revealed their story about their rape and torture they endured by the Japanese soldiers.
Earlier in 1993, the Japan government had accepted about the set up of brothel for the imperial army during the war.
Later in 1995, the Japan government had approved special fund for comfort women. But, Most of the former comfort women had rejected the fund and asked for the formal compensation arrangement from the government.
