The rebels continue to ravage the possibility of peace in Southern Myanmar. Led by Karen National Union, the belligerents are among the world’s longest-running insurgencies. Last week, more innocent blood spattered on the roads, as the dissenters fired on and killed bus passengers in two separate incidents.

The military-junta controlled official state mouthpiece New Light of Myanmar was first to disclose the news of brutal murder of innocent bus passengers. In both incidents of brutal violence, 27 people were killed and 11 injured. The first attack on a minibus occurred on Thursday in Karen state, near the border with Thailand killing 10 passengers.

Emboldened by the inaction of the military ruled state administration, the insurgents mounted a similar attack killing 17 people in the neighboring Kayah state on the very next day. In both the incidents, the rebels detonated bombs as the bus drove and indiscriminately shoot the injured.

These two killings of guiltless bus passengers are putting a question mark on the ability of the military ruled Government of Myanmar to secure the life and liberty of the people. Its stout deference to talks with insurgents run de facto Government of Karen National Union is only inflicting more misery and insecurity on the people of Southern Myanmar. The military intelligence is also worthless to monitor the movements of the rebel leaders.

Since General Ne Win’s coup in 1962 to dismiss the UN’s democratically elected government Myanmar has been in a state of virtual infighting. The signing of ceasefires agreements with 17 ethnic armed groups in last 20 years haven’t yielded any significant result. People continue to bleed under the scourge of an authoritarian government without legitimate right to rule and are deeply absorbed in nepotism and corruption.

The rebel attack on passengers is, perhaps, a manifestation of long frustration among the ethnic tribal insurgents of Southern Myanmar. The tribes like Karen, Shann,Bugora, Chingas and many more have been given considerable autonomy during the British rule. But under the present military government they are being treated as second grade citizens. The economic condition in the southern areas is also adding to the rank of insurgency there.

A democratically elected government with a non-callous attitude to the ethnic people can help the problem to solve for good and save the life of innocent people.
