The unofficial war between the official government in Sri Lanka and the rebels, the Tamil tigers continues to take innocent civilians in its lap. The war has been raging over a long time, with the LTTE demanding a Tamil homeland in the north and east of the island. And the government is reluctant to fulfil their illegitimate demand.
In a recent attack, five people lost their lives and 26 injured when a bus carrying them hit a mine outside the town of Vavuniya, 250 km (155 miles) north of the capital, Colombo and the last town held by the government. After this, the territory under LTTE begins. Though, the Tigers deny any hand in the incident, and contrarily blaming the military for the attack. The injured - including seven soldiers - have been admitted to local hospitals. The attack was the second in less than a week, after 16 people were killed when a bus was targeted in eastern Ampara district on Monday.
The attack is a part of a series of attacks being carried out by the LTTE. The assaults continue even though, officially both the government and the LTTE have declared a ceasefire since 2002. Yet, the killings of innocent civilians keep on attracting attention at both national and international level.
Over 4,000 people have lost their lives since 2005. And while the government and the LTTE play the blame game, more lives will be lost. It is a war in which no one is a winner. All are losers.
