Pakistan was formed as a Utopia for breakout Indian Muslims by Jinnah. Utopias can never be, but the opposite is easier to achieve. Pakistan is now run by terrorists, donning military uniform. The irony is the global pundits’ commenting on the mess and their asking the wrong questions — yes, the point is not whether terrorists are being sheltered by President Musharraf, but, who are the real terrorists. It appears, President Musharraf’ military-rule is the real guerrilla outfit. Los Angeles Times reports on the hundreds of innocent Pakistanis jailed by the Musharraf regime after 9/11.
Musharraf has used the event to pick up civil rights activists as well as innocent students. In fact, the news is disturbing for it seems that Musharraf has a penchant for letting terrorist organizations flourish. Benazir Bhutto was killed by terrorists and Musharraf condemns it with a poker face. No blame imputes to him.
Take the case of a Zoology doctoral student Abid Ziadi. He was tortured in the jail, hung upside down and mercilessly beaten and then declared a terrorist! He was later released. Ziadi remains clueless till date about why he was picked up and indeed, why released. He was slated for execution.
There are thousands of people in Pakistan who are languishing in jails. Human Rights Watches have nearly given up on the situation. Indeed, the first targets of Musharraf are the Human Rights activists. The Pakistan Supreme Court had bitterly fought for the release of the vanished people of Pakistan. But, Musharraf imposes ‘Emergency’ and other tactics and effectively chastises and silenced the judiciary there.
The situation in Pakistan is best understood by reading the works of Franz Kafka. In Kafka’s The Trial, a man is just summoned to the court and none can tell him of his crime, and neither knows what his punishment will be! Is this today’s Pakistan?
Nobody knows when anyone at all may be killed, tortured, maimed or plain whipped! Anything can happen. Pakistan has become a real ‘dystopia’.
