The Monarchy is being erased from every corner of Nepal it seems. The King’s image has already been removed from bank notes. Now, the Nepalese government has taken another important decision regarding the Royal properties.
The government wants to make the land and properties of the royal family, including those of King Gyanendra as national property. For this, a high-level committee has been come into effect to suggest ways to the government.
It is being reported that the royal family are largely believed to have millions of dollars of movable and non-movable properties.
The Nepalese cabinet has appointed Gopal Man Shrestha as the head of the three-member committee. The committee would investigate, locate, seize and nationalize King Gyanendra’s property in one-month time. However, the government would allow Gyanendra to retain the property he owned before he became king in 2001.
Earlier, the government decided to replace King’s image on its 10-rupee bank notes with an image of Mount Everest. King Gyanendra had openly accepted the responsibility for “success and failure” under his direct rule. The king had taken the country under direct control in February 2005.
King Gyanendra’s one-year regime had become widely unpopular in Nepal. A high-level inquiry commission had reported that the king had misused state funds during his direct rule. It had also recommended enacting new laws in the country to punish him.
Now, the fate of the monarchy would be decided after the constituent assembly election that is scheduled to be happened in June this year.
