Indeed people churn out unique ways to air their voice. In one such bizarre incident three Americans and one Tibetan-American activist have been detained at the famous Mount Everest base camp. The quadruplets were calling for Tibetan independence and protesting the forthcoming Olympics that would take place in Beijing next year.
The Chinese police took them into custody when they managed to enter the Chinese encampment and unfurled a banner at the mountain’s base camp. Their placard displayed: One World, One Dream, Free Tibet 2008. Interestingly the Slogan for the 2008 Olympics is ‘One World, One Dream’. They held the banner while one of them sang their national anthem and lit a torch for Tibet’s freedom. But soon Chinese police reached the spot and held them, after interrogating the protesters latter passports were seized.
It has been found that the intention of these protesters was to carry the banner to the peak of the mighty Mount Everest. The police have also informed that these detainees are in good health but their release is unsure. Though China has promised to bring economic prowess that would eliminate the age-old poverty of the region, but Tibetans and many more are yet to believe it.
China also has plans to take 2008 Olympic torch relay route to the top of Everest, which is the world’s tallest mountain and stands on Tibet-Nepal border. China has also made it clear that the Olympic torch would also be taken to self-ruled Taiwan, which China still sees as its territory. Though this statement has appeared politically sensitive to many.
