Philippines officials have reported to hit hard on a coup plot that was being planned against the President Gloria Arroyo. The police have arrested a former Philippines senator and army colonel, Gregorio “Gringo” Honasan. He was arrested in Quezon City, north of the capital Manila.

The president has been declared a state of national emergency and had offered a $100,000 reward for Honasan.

Honasan has the background of involvement in earlier coup attempts in the Philippines in the 1980s. He has been prosecuted for another association in an army mutiny in 2003.

There is report too that Honasan broke his leg while jumped from a moving vehicle to ditch the police but police arrested him.

Earlier he was charged for the alleged coup plot and he has been hiding since February this year.

According to Justice Secretary Raul Gonzalez, He is the coup guru. His fingerprints are there in all the coup attempts in the country.

On the other hand, the opposition leader Vicente Sotto said that Mr Honasan is a two-time senator. He had no role in the alleged attempt to topple President Arroyo.

Until now, many people, several soldiers and legislators have been charged to get involved in the alleged coup.
