One of the resolutions passed at the conclusion of the annual session of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC) in Beijing on Thursday says ‘We shall firmly oppose the secessionist activities in any form to seek the de jure independence of Taiwan‘.
The resolution reiterates China’s commitment to the principle of ‘peaceful reunification, and one country two systems‘ to maintain peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait.
The resolution vowed to expand trade links and cooperation across the Strait, promote direct mail and transport, among other things.
It also called for peace, development and welfare for the compatriots on both sides of the Taiwan Strait with great sincerity.
Taiwan has been enjoying de facto independence from China since 1949 when the island broke away from mainland China. It has been trying to declare full independence since some years, inviting wrath from Beijing. Independence of the island is a raging political issue inside Taiwan.
China is firm on its part to prevent Taiwan becoming an independent country and it has made it public that it will use military force in the event of Taiwan taking the ‘ill-advised’ step.
Taiwan’s reaction to the resolution passed by Beijing is not immediately known.
Several thousand proposals brought up by the peoples’ deputies were taken up for discussions and resolutions adopted.
