78 dead, 28 injured and 11 missing, all in a period of few days in 3 different incidents at the Shanxi, Changyuan and Yuanhua coal mines in China. The reason being the same old ‘negligence in safety measures’. And these incidents are not happening exclusively in the third world or in the developing countries, but occurring anywhere in the coal fields, maybe less frequent elsewhere. The coalmine operations are one of the most dangerous mining operations in the world. The less privileged mankind when faced with no choice accepts this profession knowing fully well its fatal risks. Sadly, in spite of the unimaginable innovations in this decade in the world, we have still not developed a completely unmanned system which can achieve the same level of output without the less fortunate workers at risk.
Aided by resources, funds and research, if the learned and experienced people in the coalmine operations in the world come together with one focus of achieving an almost completely safe mining technique, then there is a ray of hope for the workers who are still there, where they and their dear ones would never want them to be.
