China may have heading towards becoming the super power or largest economy in the entire world, but its exploitation of forced or slave labor, including children and the ill treatment of workers across the nation drags it into the dark ages.
Time and again China has been severely condemned worldwide for its strict rules, violation of human rights and using children as bondage laborers by different regulator of human rights.
To improve the degrading human rights condition, China yesterday has ordered an investigation targeting the use of forced and slave labor on a national scale after reports of enslaving above 1,000 people had been published by the state press.
In the recent past, about 170 people have been detained for their alleged involvement in the illegal trade of forced laborers and above 500 bondage laborers, including children, have also been rescued from several brickyards in Shanxi and Henan provinces.
However, Anti-Slavery International is an organization (formed in early 1900s) that teams up with other organizations, specifically involved in the field of child labor, around the world, but looks inert. Child labor cannot be eliminated by brute enforcement of child labor laws. China must ensure that the needs of the poor are filled before attacking child labor. If poverty is addressed, the need for child labor will automatically diminish.
Last but not the least, China needs to address the situation by tackling the underlying causes of child labor through governmental policies and the enforcement of these policies. Only then will China succeed in the fight against child labor.
