China has flayed the Japan-sponsored resolution on North Korea calling for sanctions for its missile tests as an over-reaction, which would not only split the Security Council but would also aggravate contradictions and increase tension. Even South Korea has opposed sanction on its communist neighbor.
The United Nations Security Council held back a vote on the resolution to impose sanctions to allow Beijing to make headway in its talks with Pyongyang. Chinese side contends a vote in favor of sanctions would harm peace and stability in the Korean peninsula and the Northeast Asian region. It would also harm efforts to resume six-party talks
Washington’s top man on North Korea, Mr. Christopher Hill said in Beijing that he wanted to see what kind if leverage China had on North Korea, adding he hoped for progress on bringing North Korea back to the six-party talks.
Chinese Vice Foreign Minister as also its Vice Premier are in Pyongyang to hold talks. Meanwhile a senior North Korean official arrived in Beijing for talks, which would include talks with the President.
China fears that if the resolution in favor of sanctions would lay the foundation for military action against North Korea.
