
China has launched a navigation satellite as a part of its Compass navigation system. The satellite is planned to be used for many purposes including monitoring forest fires and even public security, according to the Chinese official news agency Xinhua.
China’s Compass navigational system is expected to cover the whole of China and many neighboring countries by 2008 eventually having a global presence.
Compass is expected to provide navigation and positioning services in areas such as telecommunications, forest fire monitoring, disaster forecasts, meteorology, petroleum prospecting, transportation and public security.
It is reported that Compass would provide its users with a positioning accuracy of 10 meters, velocity accuracy of 0.2 meters per second and timing accuracy of 50 nanoseconds.
Other Chinese space achievements include, it became the third country in the world to launch a man into space after the United States and Russia in 2003. It raised concerns globally two months ago by destroying one of its aging weather satellites using a missile.
