A bridge under construction on the Hau River, a branch of the Mekong River in southern Vietnam, collapsed killing at least 18 workers and the numbers for the missing or injured still remains unknown.
Thirteen people died on the spot when 98 feet high section of the bridge collapsed that workers have just poured the concrete in. However, five succumbed to injuries in the hospital and there are still fears of many more killed or missing as on a normal day approximately 140 people used to work on the site.
The bridge that was being built with the Japanese funding was the largest cable-stayed bridge in Southeast-Asia. The construction on this 1.71-mile long four lane-bridge was started in 2004 and was expected to be completed next year.
At the same time, there remains the ambiguity over the injury of the Japanese workers. Rescue work is on to find out the missing workers and the mobilized emergency teams from hospitals have been called in for assisting in the rescue work.
