Two targets of US’s ‘war on terror’ viz. Afghanistan and Iraq, but the success is still a far cry, albeit, the troops as well as civilian casualties mount - the reason, of course is changing goals and prolonged stay in the volatile countries.
One of the worst incidents for NATO allies occurred yesterday in a roadside bomb explosion, in the south-west of Kandahar, which took the lives of six Canadian soldiers and their Afghan translator.
The recent months have been the most violent since US invasion in 2001 and more than 100 foreign soldiers have died so far in 2007 only.
‘War on terror’ pursues Bush like cruel hounds and it’s fast loosing ground in Afghanistan and Iraq. The reasons are many: inability to eradicate terrorist outfits, rising civilian toll that results in discontent towards foreign forces and lack of powerful government...
However, insurgency is difficult to beat but the situation is not as gruesome in Afghanistan as it is in Iraq. The presence of NATO forces is providing ample time for Afghans to develop a strong political system.
Finally, Islamic terrorism is difficult to eradicate fully as one can only kill terrorists not the sprit underneath. If US is determined to end Islamist terrorism, then it has to stay in Arab world for decades or for centuries maybe.
