The death toll in the attack against Sri Lankan Navy personnel, blamed on the Tamil Tiger rebels, has risen to 99 and 116 others were injured.
The sailors were on leave and they had no weapons. The rebels smashed a truck packed with explosives into a fleet of military buses.
It is one of the worst attack since the cease fire of 2002. The incident happened in Dambulla, 90 km near to Colombo.
The spokesperson of President Mahinda Rajapakse’s office said, this attack shows the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam’s commitment to violence. It is the complete disrespect of international demands to dump violence and choose the peaceful way to get its goals.
The Japanese envoy is scheduled to meet the Sri Lankan President to build up the peace process between the government and rebels. Now, after the attack, it will be tough for the government to sit and talk with the rebels. However, the rebels continuously deny their hands in these kinds of attacks.
