troops-in-ambush_246The war on terror in Afghanistan started by the US, continues to have its side effects. The jihadis are reluctant to leave the war torn land. The mountains and passes give them a better place to hide. And it is behind the mountains that they carry attacks on innocent civilians and the army on a daily basis.

Each year Taliban fighters step-up their attacks as the spring thaw begins. Recently, some 35 Taliban militants were killed following an air strike and clashes with local security forces in southern Afghanistan. The attack took place on eve of the meeting of NATO ministers in Canada asking for more resources in the volatile Afghan south. The blast occurred three days after six Canadian troops were killed in a roadside bomb explosion, also in the south. There are some 2,500 Canadian troops in Afghanistan in the 36,000-strong NATO force and 53 soldiers have lost their lives in the fight against Taliban.

Operation Achilles has been started to ambush the Taliban militants and strike at their hideouts. The operation involves more than 5,500 NATO and Afghan soldiers to battle it out against the hardcore Taliban insurgents.

The NATO forces have been demanding more troops and resources in Afghanistan to fight the rebels. But till now their appeals have not been paid heed to by a few allies like Germany and France, who question the very essence of sending more forces. And also the protests at home for bringing back the army continue.

So many lives have been lost in Afghanistan. But no solution stands to stare even up till now. The activities of the militants need to be curtailed if peace is desired for Afghanistan. The militants need to be nipped in the bud be it in Afghanistan, Kashmir, Iraq or anywhere in the world. Only then can we hope of a world free from terror.
